Number 14 - British High Commissoner comment on pursuing justice for Nuclear Test Veterans.

This is number 14 of a 15 part blog series, created by Mr Roy Sefton, Chair of the New Zealand Nuclear Test Veterans Association.

The New Zealand Nuclear Test Veterans Association was three weeks away from presenting Treasurer Winston Peters with its case to receive the $200,000 Government grant. The funding was originally intended to assist Operation Grapple veterans investigate legal action against the Government of the UK. Peters was removed from office before we could meet with him.

Shortly after a new Prime Minister, Jenny Shipley, reneged on the Government promise of the funding. Peters however continued supporting the Grapple Veterans. He called in the British High Commissioner and expressed his concerns about the health of the New Zealand veterans.

The Commissioner advised Peters if he pursued the matter it would be seen as an unfriendly act. That comment could only be considered as a veiled threat on behalf of the British Government.
