On the 22nd of October 2025, LABRATS launched their educational package 'British Nuclear Testing - An Introduction' at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay. Sponsored by Sioned Williams MS and supported by Mabon ap Gwnfor, the event was a great success.
People from across the country attended the event at the Pierhead building and were welcomed by the Senedd Event team with tea, coffee and of course, traditional Welsh cakes.
The event was introduced by Alan Owen with an incredible speech by Sioned Williams MS and Mabon ap Gwnfor MS, who have been incredible supporters of our campaign for truth and justice.
The new educational package consists of a 24-page book, an educational video and an interactive online course.

Aimed at students 14+ and anyone interested in the testing program, the course is fully interactive, with each page of the book containing a QR Code which links to an oral testimony from an eyewitness of the test. These oral histories were provided by the NTV Oral History Project and can be found on the British Library website. (https://www.bl.uk/stories/explore/nuclear-test-veterans)
It is incredibly important to link the book with the oral histories and the online course. This allows for a full interactive experience.
The 18-minute educational video, which was produced by Brian Cowden, narrated by Steve Purse and checked by Joseph Owen, was played at the event.
A Q&A session (chaired by Alan Owen) followed with Professor Chris Hill (Co-lead of the Oral History Project), Sioned Williams MS, Captain Terry Hughes (RFA - Operation Grapple) and Bryan Jarvis (Operation Grapple).
The discussions were very emotional; the scars of the testing program were evident in the veterans' testimonies. The pain and the suffering are still very much evident today.
You can watch the event below:
We would like to thank everyone who attended the event; it was a great success. Special mention to Sioned Williams MS for sponsoring the event, Mabon ap Gwnfor MS for his incredible support over many years and to the Senedd events team for ensuring that everything worked smoothly.
It is difficult to sit on a panel and be asked questions about such a sensitive topic, yet Professor Chris Hill, Sioned Williams MS, Captain Terry Hughes and Bryan Jarvis were fantastic; it brought to life the scale of the destruction and the issues still facing the Nuclear Test Veterans, so we thank them for their dedication to the cause.
We must also thank Steve Purse, Brian Cowden and Joseph Owen for the video, which is a great piece of work. We also thank Kev Lowery of Extramile Design for his design of the book, our logo, our rats and every edition of the ATOM Magazine.
The educational package is free for anyone to use. You can download a PDF of the book, watch the video and take the online course for free. Physical copies of the book can also be ordered online.

Our next event is a launch in England on the 7th November in Manchester, where we will also be laying a wreath in memory of those who have not made it this far. We must never forget Britain's Nuclear Testing program and the brave servicemen, scientists, civilians and indigenous people who were all affected by it. This educational package does that and more.
